How Much Time Should You Spend in Florence?

I know that people have time limits when traveling, and they want to see more than one single place. But Florence is quite different than most other places because of what I will tell you in 4 short paragraphs.

If I had a limited vacation and was flying across the world, I would spend no less than 3–4 days, bare minimum. You see, 4 years ago, I spent 2.5 months in Florence, and since then I have learned about more places that I wish I could have seen. The longer you stay, the deeper you can go. But of course, this is true of every place to which you will travel. Or is it?

Florence is a city of rare depth, especially to us Western World folks. It is the city that lived in the Dark Ages for 1,000 years until a group of men, with no prior plan to do so, turned history on its ear and changed the entire Western World. By that, I mean that these ‘guys’ found a wealthy family to fund their new ‘language,’ a language that caught on to became the newly outspoken voice of a people that before then were not allowed to speak their minds. And it was this new voice that yanked Europe out of the dark ages and into the light.

What am I speaking of? The Renaissance, of course. And that group of ‘guys’? Perhaps you may have heard of some of them: Michelangelo, da Vinci, Raphael, Donatello, Dante, Machiavelli, Galileo and scores of others. 2 interesting facts: most of these guys came from Florence, and most of them actually knew each other! The money guys? They were the notorious Medici family. And this new language? It was Art.

The word ‘Renaissance’ is a French term meaning ‘rebirth’ or ‘awakening’ or ‘enlightenment.’ If this ‘enlightenment’ did not occur, our lives might still be vastly different than it is today. We might still live in the Dark Ages.
